The heat and humidity can make your makeup melt faster than the time you took to apply it. Of course, there are plenty of ways to make your makeup last longer. You can invest in a good setting spray, or try baking if you’ve got oily skin—but who better to ask what actually works than someone who works in the heat? We turn to Indonesian chef Gloria Susindra to find out what beauty tips and tricks she has up her sleeves to make any makeup look last all day long, sans grease.

Former head chef of bustling restaurant Mother Monster in Jakarta and founder of the Jakarta Supper Club, Chef Gloria’s everyday routine begins with the essentials: starting with skincare before going in with makeup.

A great beauty routine, no matter the weather, always starts with skincare. Ensuring you cleanse, exfoliate, moisturize, and incorporating skin treatments like masks into your skincare routine is very important. With tricky sensitive combination as her skin type, Gloria has to make sure to soothe dry areas while controlling sebum production. Her current favourite skin treat is the ultra-hydrating Summer Fridays Jet Lag Mask, which helps to combat puffy and tired skin.

Gloria starts off her morning everyday skincare routine by washing her face, following up with Tatcha’s The Essence and the Embryolisse Lait-Crème Concentré, before finishing off with sunscreen and primer.

When asked what helps the most to combat the heat and grease of working in a kitchen, Gloria says moisturiser is key. The kitchen is drier than it is greasy; since she is exposed to heat for long periods of time, she makes sure to use copious amounts of moisturizer. For those with oilier skin, you may think that moisturising in the face of heat might be counterintuitive. The thing is, not moisturising means your skin becomes susceptible to dehydration, resulting in the overproduction of sebum to combat dryness.

One of Gloria’s beauty essentials packs exfoliation and hydration in one go—the Biologique Recherche P50 Lotion exfoliates, moisturizes and balances the pH level of the skin.

There’s a reason why people wear less makeup in hot weather. Wearing layers of foundation and concealer just makes it easier for your makeup to start sliding off your face the second you step out. Lighten your routine and use only what you need.

When preparing for a day in the kitchen, Gloria’s makeup routine is simple: dabbing concealer under the eyes and on problem areas, liquid blush, brow pencil, and occasionally drawing on eyeliner before finishing with powder. Some of her favourites are the Nars Soft Matte Concealer and the Liquid Blush in Orgasm. For lips, she likes the Nars Velvet Lip Glide for its long-lasting yet nourishing formula.

Her last tip is to invest in a quality setting powder. This will get rid of any shine and make your makeup last longer. Her current favourite is the Laura Mercier Secret Brightening Setting Powder, which helps prolong concealer and brightens up any complexion.
