Dr. Barbara Sturm: Why It’s Not Just A Hype

The first time I heard of Dr. Barbara Sturm was when Kim Kardashian posted a selfie of her bloodied face, along with the hashtag #vampirefacial. Dr. Sturm was made famous for being a pioneer of the platelet-rich plasma facial and later on, the “blood cream” — a topical blood-infused cream using our own blood to improve our skin. Her skincare line is also approved by celebrities like Gwyneth Paltrow, Rosie Huntington-Whiteley, Hailey Bieber and Bella Hadid.
So, who is Dr. Barbara Sturm? Based in Germany, Dr Sturm specialised in orthopaedics before developing an interest in dermatology. The aesthetics doctor and molecular cosmetics specialist started her skincare range under the philosophy that skincare products should heal your skin sans fragrance, mineral oils, and preservatives.
The minimalist, almost-clinical packaging of her products also makes the line stand out on any Instagram feed and vanity counter.
Why we’re obsessed:
It was the Face Cream Light (SGD275) that made me fall in love with the brand. While on the pricier side, I found it incredibly effective at hydrating and soothing my acne-prone, combination skin without weighing it down. It was developed as a lightweight moisturizer suitable for warmer climates or those with oilier skin types. It’s also formulated with skin-loving and anti-ageing ingredients like purslane (which is one of Dr Sturm’s favourite skincare ingredients), bisabolol and ginger, moisturizing and calming the skin.
My other personal favourite is the Balancing Toner (SGD80), which is a super soft and mild toner that can be used daily as part of your routine. My skin has started looking a lot brighter and more even since I started using it. Of course, there’s the highly-raved Hyaluronic Serum (SGD410), which is the most fundamental creation in Dr. Sturm’s skincare line and will ultra-boost your skin’s hydration levels.
Science-based skincare that’s nice to look at, celebrities adore, and actually works? Now that’s a hype worth looking into.
