Nur Fazirah on Makeup That Suits the Mood & the Best Setting Spray

For Nur Fazirah, makeup is all about the mood. “On days I dread going to work, I spend less than 10 minutes on makeup,” says the 23-year-old, who is a nurse. “It’s as simple as applying sunscreen, concealer, filling up my brows and a little mascara.”

“Some days I’ll head out with just sunscreen and no makeup. And on special days where I feel like celebrating, I’ll take the time to put on makeup because these days don’t happen too frequently!”

This minimalist approach even extends to her style: “My go-to look for the day is definitely a relaxed fit, something that screams a ‘hygge’ lifestyle. My hijab typically comes last, picking a neutral colour to match with my outfit because I’m all about neutrals!”

We chat with Fazirah as she talks about seeking inspiration, diversity, and her go-to setting spray that helps keep her makeup sweatproof in Singapore’s weather. More, ahead.

Where are you finding your inspiration these days?

I was never really an active person because work takes a toll on my body all the time. Until earlier this year when I started picking up badminton as a go-to sport during my off days for a healthier lifestyle. I try to do it once a week when I have the time. If I don’t feel like sweating, my go-to activity to savour my off days is to look for aesthetic spaces that serve great coffee.

Our culture at large hasn’t always celebrated all skin colours. How do you think women can celebrate their true self and culture and overcome insecurities?

My personal mantra is just do you. Embracing yourself as an individual is a huge step towards celebrating your true self and culture. I’m happy with myself regardless of my culture, skin tone and so on. It’s a matter of accepting yourself and living life as who you are, instead of conforming to the norm.

When you see the beauty in you, no one can take it away from you because you have truly realised the true potential you can bring into this world.

What does diversity mean to you?

“Diversity means inclusivity to me.”

It has a strong notion that should not be lightly used because it is a word that greatly represents people everywhere. Regardless of your gender, skin, age or ability, you matter. Your contributions and authenticity matter because everyone should be included.

To be diverse is to include.

Talk us through some of your favourite beauty products.

After cleansing, I exfoliate my face with Paula’s Choice Skin Perfecting 2% BHA Liquid Exfoliant. It’s a must in routine to smoothen out my skin texture! Definitely my favourite product in my routine.

After letting it sink in, I apply the Origins Plantscription Powerful Lifting Overnight Mask. Trust me, your skin won’t look dull ever again! It even adds a very natural glow to your skin and smells heavenly too.

What is your signature beauty look? Can you share some tips that help with keeping makeup sweatproof in Singapore’s weather?

A natural makeup look best defines me. I find that a good setting spray is the best way to keep your makeup intact despite the weather. I love using the Urban Decay All Nighter Long Lasting Makeup Setting Spray. You’re welcome!

Most of us feel most confident when our skin is healthy. What else helps you feel your best?

Aside from a healthy complexion, exercising makes me feel my best because it increases your overall health and sense of wellbeing, which puts more pep in your step every day.

What is making you feel hopeful about the future right now?

It was truly heartwarming to see people helping out the less fortunate during the pandemic, especially in terms of financial difficulties.

I hope that after everything the world has gone through physically and mentally with the pandemic, people will start to appreciate the little things better and not taking things for granted. It doesn’t matter how wealthy or successful you are, all of it means nothing when you don’t have the freedom or health to enjoy it.
