Linh Niller on Go-To Outfits & the Exfoliating Products She Swears By
Growing up in a small suburb right outside of Boston hasn’t made it harder for Linh Niller Huynh to dive headfirst into big-city life. In fact, the digital content creator and interior stylist has been based in New York City for—almost!—a decade now, after graduating from Parsons School of Design in 2016.
Inspired by the fast pace of New York City, Linh’s personal style is one that embodies effortlessness, striking the perfect balance of styling high-end pieces with affordable everyday fashion. From her home to her wardrobe, her “less is more” ethos shines through but doesn’t sacrifice aesthetics. We caught up with Linh to find out what inspired her to start her blog, where she seeks style inspiration, and the beauty products she swears by, below.
What inspired you to start blogging? What’s the best part of your work?
I started my blog when I was in university mainly because I needed a creative outlet outside of class. I always had a passion for styling clothes since I was little but in my early twenties, I did not have the budget to afford designer clothing. This meant I had to get savvy and find chic pieces that looked expensive but were budget-friendly! I started shopping vintage, secondhand, and fast fashion at the time. Since then, my style has evolved immensely but that is where it all started for me.
The best part of my work is definitely the freedom that comes from working for myself. It was always the goal, as far back as I can remember. I love that I love what I do… it’s something I do not take for granted. I get to be creative and I get to challenge myself constantly, evolving with time and experience.
Where do you look for style inspiration? Who was your first style icon?
My first style icons were actually Princess Diana and Audrey Hepburn! Both women exuded this chic effortlessness and had a style that has proven to be timeless.
I often look to Pinterest, the street style in NYC, and sometimes Instagram to find new style inspiration. I’m inspired by how men and women dress and apply it to my own styling and tailoring. I also still love flipping through magazines to bring about the new energy that I can apply to my wardrobe.
How does the city where you live, in addition to your cultural heritage, influence your personal style?
New York City had a beautiful way of eating me up and spitting me out the last nine years and I’m forever grateful for it. Not only did it change me as a person but it also changed my style a whole lot! The city moulded my style into one that blends together comfort, minimal silhouettes and neutral colour palettes with the understated yet structured aspect of masculinity and the softness of femininity. I love heels but you’ll almost always find me in sneakers, trousers, a structured long coat, and a t-shirt.
I’m Cambodian and Vietnamese and was raised in a Buddhist household. My mom is a natural beauty and her smile and vibrant energy was and is her best accessory. I admired that about her; that she didn’t pay too much attention to what she wore but everyone around her saw her beauty. On the other hand, my dad was very into tailored clothing and wearing a “uniform”—variations of trousers and button-down shirts that were always crisp and well-taken care of. Although he cared for his clothes, he was a minimalist in the way he dressed. In many ways, both my parents’ impacted my style. I like having a uniform—a go-to look so to speak—so I don’t have to put too much energy or time into getting dressed. Of all the decisions we make in one day, I like when getting dressed doesn’t require much thinking. I learned to be grateful for the clothes on my body, take care of them, value them, and not deeply attach myself to material items.
What’s your typical skincare routine like?
I use a toner, Vitamin C and E serum, a lightweight moisturiser, and SPF every single morning. At night, it’s the same routine, except I use a cleansing balm to take off my makeup and use a heavier moisturiser to keep my skin hydrated overnight.
Favourite skincare step?
Exfoliating! My skin always feels fresh and clean after this step. I swear by Dr. Dennis Gross Alpha Beta Daily Peels.
What is your go-to makeup look?
I’m all about the no-makeup makeup look, but with a tiny cat-eye flick—something subtle but makes a difference. My eyes are quite big and almond-shaped so the cat-eye flick helps elongate them. I just do a little concealer, blush, contour powder, and brow pencil to complete the look. I’m very light-handed with products so I don’t look like I have a lot on.
What are your favourite beauty rituals to treat yourself after a long day?
I love putting on a face mask after a long day. There’s something so soothing about taking a little time to put on a hydrating or exfoliating mask. The feeling afterwards is so lovely and relaxing. Then gua sha to relieve any tension in my facial muscles and encourage lymphatic drainage.
Can you share any tips that have changed the way you do your skincare or makeup?
I highly recommend trying the Dermaflash Anti-Aging Dermaplaning Exfoliation Device. Think of the smoothing and brightening effects of dermaplaning facials but in the comfort of your own home. It was a game-changer for me! It got rid of peach fuzz, dead skin cells and made my skin look radiant and smooth. My serums absorbed deeper into my skin and it definitely made my makeup look better.
As for makeup, I am a huge mascara girl. I can’t live without it! But I do have short, straight, stubborn Asian lashes. A solution that has worked for me the past few years to keeping the curl throughout the day is using waterproof mascara. I use Dior’s waterproof Diorshow mascara and I absolutely love it. For some reason, I don’t love how I look in falsies or extensions so if you’re like me and only use mascara, I hope this helps!
Where do you hope to be in the next in five years?
Living in my dream home that I’ve designed, happy, in love, creating beautiful moments with my family, and continuing to do what I love for work.
