Here’s How to Set Your Makeup So It Doesn’t Transfer to Your Mask

Aside from steaming up glasses and the dreaded maskne, masks make wearing makeup a challenge. From patchy foundation to smudged lipstick, wearing makeup and a mask seems like a recipe for one messy (not to mention stained) mask. Which leaves us with trying to find a way to set our makeup in place.

From lightweight formulas to oil-free primers, we’re here to tell you how to set your makeup and make it transfer-proof.

Start with a lightweight base

As always, apply sunscreen before any makeup. It’s best to keep the products to a minimum, so opt for multi-tasking products to minimise the layers on the skin. If you’re not a foundation kinda gal, now is the time to bust out your tinted sunscreens.

Always prime before makeup

If you are planning on wearing foundation, use a good primer first. We like Smashbox’s Photo Finish primer for its ability to blur fine lines, fill pores and create a smooth base for makeup. It’s also lightweight and oil-free, a definite plus since makeup transfer is caused by a combination of oil within your makeup and the humidity caused under the mask.

Opt for waterproof formulas

Stick to lightweight and waterproof foundations; they are more long-lasting and sweat-proof. Consider applying them as you would a concealer – only in spots and certain areas. Of course, you can apply normally when it comes to the top half of your face that’s uncovered by a mask.

Setting powder is your best friend

Once your base is done, set your base with a loose translucent powder.The finer the powder the better, as it can prevent your makeup from slipping and sliding, and double up to give more coverage.

If you’re worried about looking very heavily made up, try setting sprays. This one from MAC refreshes the skin while instantly controlling shine and oil.

Play up the upper half of your face

Since your mask covers the lower half of your face, all the focus is on the eyes. It’s a great opportunity to play up the eyes.

If you prefer a more natural look, line your eyes and load your lashes with mascara. Otherwise, have some fun with graphic eyeliners or colours from an eyeshadow palette of your choice.
