Mai Quynh’s Smokey Eye Look for Asian Eyes

The smokey eye is a classic for a reason: it’s versatile and glamorous, a look that always stuns. But it can be a daunting eye look to replicate, especially if you have Asian eyes. You’re blending and blending, but it looks more like a black eye instead of the sultry look you were going for.

We reached out to celebrity makeup artist Mai Quynh (@storyofmailife), who has glammed up the faces of celebrities like Liu Yifei, Saoirse Ronan and Chloë Grace Moretz, to show us how to achieve the alluring eye look. Scroll down for the full guide.

Mai Quynh’s Guide to Smokey Eyes for Asian Eyes

Step 1. Prep your skin with moisturizer; Mai’s pick is the Augustinus Bader The Rich Cream (SGD186).

Step 2. Start off with a neutral eyeshadow as the base. Mai’s favourite is the Armani Beauty Eye Tint. Pat on the inner corner of the eyes using fingers, before blending it lightly to the outer area and the rest of the lid.

She suggests using such eyeshadow products as bases and packing powder eyeshadow on top as it adds a dimension to the eyes.

Step 3. Next, Mai goes in with the Armani Beauty Eye Tint in 46 (SGD40.50). “I always use my ring finger to blend in eyeshadow,” says Mai. “It’s the most gentle and weak finger, so the pressure is not too hard on the eye.”

Step 4. Go in with a darker eyeshadow shade and concentrate more on the outer area of the lid, before blending lightly into the middle.

Step 5. Take a slanted, angled blending brush and blend.

Step 6. Smudge an eyeliner pencil along the lower lashline — Mai likes the Armani Beauty Smooth Silk Eye Pencil in 11 (SGD94). “What you can also do is line the inside of the eyes (waterline); it just makes it more dramatic and intensifies the lash line,” suggests Mai.

Step 7. Take a dome-shaped brush and dip into the dark eyeshadow earlier to run along where the eyeliner pencil was applied for more intensity.

Step 8. Go for neutral shades when trying this look. “The key here is to use taupe-y shades,” says Mai. “I definitely want the look to be dramatic, but I don’t want it to be black, so you end up with raccoon eyes.”

Step 9. Highlight the inner corners of the eyes for definition. Mai uses the Armani Beauty Eye Tint in 42.

Step 10. Lastly, curl your lashes and apply mascara. “I find that curling my lashes helps open up my eyes and make me look more awake,” says Mai.
